Master filmmaker Steven Spielberg recently launched a new division of Amblin Entertainment known as Amblin Partners. It is responsible for producing and developing various film and television projects, including the recently released Spielberg-directed Roald Dahl fantasy novel adaptation, The BFG.

With projects from this division of Amblin including the recent HBO TV movie All The Way and TV series American Gothic (as well as upcoming theatrical releases such as The Girl on the Train film adaptation), Spielberg’s involvement certainly gives the aura of something special. That is easily the case when it comes to adding Spielberg’s involvement to any project (movie or TV show) that involves visitors from another planet – such as the in-development movie, The Fall.

Deadline is reporting that Amblin is developing The Fall, an alien invasion thriller based on a script by Austrailian writer Pete Bridges. The Fall takes place in the midst of an alien invasion, where a recently divorced couple must survive a trek on foot from Atlanta to the suburbs, where their young children are home alone.

This thriller comes from a spec script by Bridges, who was discovered through online screenwriting site Virtual Pitch Fest. Bridges’ previous script, Resurface, a survival story set at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, made the Hollywood Black List of best unproduced scripts. The Fall will be produced by Madhouse Entertainment partner Adam Kolbrenner, with Madhouse’s Robyn Meisinger serving as executive producer. Madhouse is the company behind the 2013 thriller Prisoners. No stars or directors are currently attached at this time.

Given past history with Spielberg, it is not surprising to see Amblin make a deal for this property. Spielberg directed the 2005 blockbuster War of the Worlds, which featured Tom Cruise attempting to escape an alien invasion with his family. There was also the TNT series Falling Skies, produced by Spielberg, which dealt with the human race fighting back against alien invaders. Both War of the Worlds and Falling Skies kept family values at the center, which is exactly what The Fall intends to do.

The concept for The Fall matches the kind of high-stakes level any kind of alien invasion story requires, with a novel approach that fits with what we could expect for an idea from the man who gave us Close Encounters of the Third Kind and other classics. There is a question of how involved Spielberg will actually be with The Fall though. Spielberg has several projects lined up for the next 2-3 years already (including Indiana Jones 5), so odds are he won’t be directing The Fall himself.
